WHAT QURAN SAYS ABOUT WOMEN RIGHTS OF EQUALITY WITH MEN

It was the Quran that clearly established the principle of spiritual and social equality between men and women. Spiritual equality is quite evident in surat al-Ahzab, verse 35, in which the Qur’an refers to the two genders when calling the believers to uphold to the spiritual requirements of Islam. Similarly, in surat at-Tawbah, verse 71 the Quran declares the believing men and women as protectors and helpers of one another “awliya'’”. It goes on to say, “they collaborate to promote all what is good and oppose all that is evil.”

This is obviously an obligation to safeguard the public space, which means that women also have an obligation to promote public good and to prevent corruption in the public.

The Quran refers to complimentary responsibilities for men and women with regard to family matters. It is here where early scholars have assigned different rights and responsibilities for men and women, but here we have to realize that these differences are about allowing the two genders to complement one another, and it should not be used to provide privileges to one gender or deny the other gender their human dignity that Allah has given all human beings.
