HUMAN RIGHTS – ISLAMIC BELIEFS

The Almighty Allah summarized the mission of His last prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the following verse of the holy Quran.

“We sent you as a mercy to humanity.” (Al-Hajj 22: 107)

The confusion about the importance of human rights in Islam are often derived from the way certain people from different schools of thoughts promote human rights for the sake of benefiting a special class of people. On the one hand there are those who use human rights as a tool to reject some traditional values , and therefore promote certain social ills such as homosexuality under the banner of human rights. There are also those who use human rights selectively to justify intervention of the powerful in the internal affairs of weak and underdeveloped societies. But human rights are not about these practices, they are about ensuring the well-being of total humanity, and not as a support to some ill minded people who try to justify whatever they like to.
